CFUW PQ provides record number of scholarships and bursaries for 2025
We value the altruism of local foundations, businesses and legacies that have donated to our club over the years. Generous donations and gifts help the CFUW PQ Scholarship and Bursary Trust to provide educational opportunities that benefit students and also the community as a whole. The Trust is also grateful for the support of our local CFUW PQ club members who donate generously, spread the word about the awards we offer and help with the annual book sale at Coombs. All year long we sort books that arrive at the box by Save-On-Foods in preparation for our major fund raising activity, the giant book sale, in late September at Coombs Fairground.
We wish the scholars well and we look forward to supporting more students in the future.
Since its beginning in 1982, CFUW PQ club has been active in a variety of fundraising activities for scholarships. In 1984, the Ways and Means Committee organized the publication and sale of the first club cookbook; a second cookbook was published the following year, both raising seed-monies for our scholarship fund. Our first annual club book sale took place in February 1985, also to benefit scholarships.
The Scholarship and Bursary Trust (SBT) was formally established in 1987, (registered with CRA) and initially organized the books sale. Subsequently the club became responsible for the book sale, the proceeds going to club operations and from these the SBT receives a grant. The first of the bridge luncheons was held in 1992, the goal of which was to establish and maintain a specific bursary for a mature woman entering or returning to post-secondary education. A special fundraiser 2018, was our Memoir Writing Workshop, dedicated to raise funds for a one-time club Centennial Scholarship of $5,000 honouring CFUW’s 100 years.
The SBT also relies on donated funds from members of the club and the public, as well as several bequests. Details on how to donate can be found here.

Justice Bertha Wilson (1923–2007)
First woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. Born into a working-class family in Scotland, Bertha Wilson trained in law in Canada. When appointed to the high court in 1982, she already had a track record as a justice with the Ontario Court of Appeal, where she was known for her humane decisions in areas such as human rights and the division of matrimonial property. During her nine years on the Supreme Court, she helped her male colleagues to understand that seemingly neutral laws often operated to the disadvantage of women and minorities - thank you Justice Wilson!

Ga’axstal’as, Jane Constance Cook (1870–1951)
Kwakwaka’wakw leader, cultural mediator, and activist. Born on Vancouver Island, Ga’axstal’as, Jane Constance Cook was the daughter of a Kwakwaka'wakw noblewoman and a white fur trader. Raised by a missionary couple, she had strong literacy skills and developed a good understanding of both cultures and legal systems. As the grip of colonialism tightened around West Coast nations, Cook lobbied for First Nations to retain rights of access to land and resources. She testified at the McKenna-McBride Royal Commission of 1914 and was the only woman on the executive of the Allied Indian Tribes of British Columbia in 1922. A fierce advocate for women and children, she was also a midwife and healer and raised sixteen children.
